It was the early hours of morning when Melanie was gently woken from her fitful slumber but the steady tugging on her shoulder was too insistent to ignore.
She stopped fighting it and opened her eyes.
‘Shhhh.’ The voice whispered as she felt cool lips brush hers. She felt a warm hand softly stroke the sparse wisps of her hair.
She blinked in the subdued light. ‘Martin?’ she breathed.
Martin nodded and smiled and Melanie was struck by the dark circles under his eyes.
She had caused him so much pain.
